In a Rut

Imagine you're in a deep ditch, a rut, if you will, one that you cannot see out over the egde. Pretend that ditch is just a few feet wide and seems infinite in length...no end in sight.  You can see a bit of blue sky, and a little green grass over the edge, but that's it. You're in a rut!

Most of the time when we hear someone say, "I am stuck in a rut", we get a sense that they are just in a bit of a repetitive loop, just doing the same old things, the same old way. Perhaps it's a bit more profound, however. To the person in a rut, it can feel much more daunting, even depressive. A rut can feel almost impossible to climb out of.

What is one to do? Search for a root! Create a toe hold of some kind and reach for the edge and pull one's self up! Often efforts to get out of rut feel futile. Even though we try to escape, our footing can feel like we are not getting traction...our toe holds are giving way.  That's when we have to reach deep inside and find Presence to give us the strength to keep trying.  Sometimes we have to call for help.  Everyone needs a helping hand at times. Perhaps we just need to look for another opening, more sky, more breathing room.

In any case the first step is to recognize ruts and look to make a change, ignoring whatever and/or whomever makes us feel bound.  Ready? Get set, let's go. That simple.
